Figures, bandits were around no matter where you went, but they'd be able to answer questions if convinced to back down. Unfortunately, it was already clear that wasn't going to happen quickly. With the brigands readying themselves, Sorin moved to just behind Jax and wasted no time. No longer using his normal book, he wouldn't be able to support Jax like before. He'd mitigate the damage another way, reaching out to two of the bandits on either side while the book hovered in place, the clouds of needles converging to festering wounds upon them.
Mote A small orb dripped from one's own shadow into the air. Shines shadows out like brilliant light just beyond its edge. Danage: N/A Potency: 25% of Max VP (33) + 20% missing HP Effect: May be used once per turn without action cost (This usage cannot chain). Instead of Damage, Creates a Mote upon use with 1 hit of HP. One or more Motes may be consumed when making another attack to increase that attack's damage by Mote's Potency for each consumed. May only create 2/turn
Nilus @ 1 Basic dark magic, surrounds the target with a dark miasma that saps their life force in totality Damage: 243 Effect: Reduces a hit enemy's VP by half the damage this attack deals. If enemy has 0 VP, this attack deals twice as much damage.
Impale @ 1 Miasma coalesces into blackened darts raining from all sides. Damage: 157 Effect: Chain from Nilus, Hit targets that temporarily increase an attack's damage have that attack's damage reduced by Impale's damage next turn. Does not trigger on temporary SP increases, nor Skills and effects which provide persistent, non-conditional bonuses.
Fester @ 1 Intermediate dark magic. Wounds bubble and complete a rune floating near Sorin's head, invoked to enact the completed spell. Damage: 118 Effect: Chain from Impale. Disdain affects this attack as if it deals unmitigated damage. The next time Nilus is used, it does not chain and gains the effects of attacks it would have normally chained into (Except this effect). For each attack that would have chained, this use of Nilus benefits from SP an additional time.

Jax raised an eyebrow at the entourage that came to greet them. Bandits yes but still a bounty of information just on the way they carried themselves and their attire. While Jax had personally never been to many regions of this world this information alone would help him deduce where they had landed.
Yet their hostility was there all the same and Jax was not one to shy away. He would need to meet it often if he's to obtain the power he needs to reclaim his peoples relic. He hoists his weapon from its resting place on his back and gives a knowing glance to Sorin as he goes to meet their assailants blade to blade. His wounds still fresh from the docks in Pride but his determination renewed.

One of them looked like they were in better shape from the wreck then they would have thought. No matter. They could fix that up by focusing down the injured one first since the caster likely would be easy work after the beefier one was removed from the picture even if his strange magic left some of them with some wounds that would begin to fester very soon. For now they could rampage with their axes, planning to maim Jax first to demoralize the other before they would run him down just the same.

Having fought several battles with Jax, it was no longer entirely surprising his ability to hold off entire groups on his own, and equally impressive his ability to turn that attacking force back upon the opposition. Luckily it seemed they were ignoring him for now, which allowed him to more simply assail them. Focusing his attention at the bandit he targeted first.

While he could parry most any random blow Jax was still one man against many. Their small cuts and swings could eventually draw blood on the large warrior. This would be all they extracted from the guardian however, as his retort would be the last thing they would likely ever see. Seeing a relent in their assault Jax took the opportunity to give back what he'd been biding for and carve a swath through the earth at an oblique angle maining three of them. At the end of the swing the residual energy manifested, struck ground, and channeled its way to Sorins feet to toughen his body with bark akin to that of the shaft of the bardiche. Jax spit that little blood there was onto the ground and looked at the remaining would-be assailants with a raised eyebrow as if questioning whether to continue.

The focused fire would bring down the first bandit, the others being confused just long enough for the maiming strike to tear through the other members, the last one standing beginning to feel the enfeebling effects of the spell cast on him prior. Even still, it combined with the towering menace elicited a curt response from the one that was left.
"Oh shit!"
He would try to make his escape now, not one to linger long on his dead mates and try to outpace them, though that would be difficult for him given the current circumstances that was sapping his strength even if that didn't stop him from tucking tail and running just the same.
